Ever. With a novel. Maybe. Because I've read some stinkers over the past few years. So. "First Date" by Sue Watson introduces us to Hannah, a social worker who definitely shouldn't be allowed near children or families or anyone in need. After her recent failed relationship, feeling her rapidly ticking biological clock, she decides to try internet dating. On the first date, she meets "Alex", the most perfectly perfect handsome guy-in-a-box EVER, who loves exactly the same things she loves, up to and including vacations in Devon, labradors, the same wine, and kids. It's like he can read her mind!Although there are bad signs everywhere, Hannah has never met a red flag that she doesn't love, embrace passionately, and kiss with abandon. So what if Alex seems shifty, doesn't answer questions, double-locks his doors, tries to control Hannah's movements, seems to want to isolate Hannah from her workmates and old habits, is jealous of Hannah's male friends and acquaintances, and seems to have all the time in the world to lavish attention on Hannah, despite telling her that he is a high-powered solicitor working on demanding cases? Hannah is IN LOVE!! She ignores the warnings of her friends, and is stunned that anyone would urge caution in the face of her undying lust, er, love.This narrative is absolutely yawn-inducing. I admit to skimming the last quarter of the story. Hannah and her train-wreck just didn't cut it for me--I mean, a social worker with life skills THIS lousy should leave everyone else alone. Chances are, she'll make life worse for everyone else she's involved with. Oh, and so much for spotting the weirdos. She's established she's earned an "F" in this life lesson.There isn't too much to say about this novel. Idiot meets stranger. Idiot doesn't recognize signals which would send anyone else screaming out the door. Shock ending which reinforces initial hypothesis that protagonist is idiot. The end. Whoever referred to this book as “jaw-dropping” possibly hadn’t actually read it. The female protagonist, Hannah, is never really believable in either her business or personal life, in fact, most of the time I yearned to shake some sense into her, with her constant, annoying and yapping way of rationalising others’ wrongdoings. The main male character, Alex, is so transparently self-pitying and absorbed that his part of the storyline never fully develops into something believable or worthy of sympathy.Having said this, Ms Watson’s writing style is good, and in some parts entertaining, I would probably read more by her, and the reason why I read this book to the end. I don’t normally give up on a book, and I didn’t want to on this one.
